Remember St. Clare's

and Help Heal the Healers

It has been more than one year since we, the 1,129 former employees of St. Clare's Hospital, learned that our pension plan was being terminated as of November 1, 2018. Over 400 pensioners had their monthly pension payments slashed by 25% or more, while another 600 plus former employees learned that they would get NOTHING at all. It was devastating news for all of us, with no time to prepare. Now many former dedicated healthcare workers are faced with difficult life choices because of this. Some have had to delay their retirement and continue to work; some have had to sell their homes; and others have had to seek financial assistance wherever they can.

Since we heard the terrible news about our pension, we have done everything in our power to get back what is rightfully ours. We have searched for attorneys who might be able to help us; we have lobbied state lawmakers for funding; and have attempted to reach out to the Bishop and the Albany Diocese for assistance. Although there have been small victories and words of encouragement, we still have not received any financial help.

Both New York State and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany played a role in this financial disaster, yet neither has claimed any responsibility and both have turned their backs on us, the healthcare workers who tirelessly took care of New York's poorest at the direction of the church. We have been abandoned after carrying out their work.

The public support we have received over the past 6 months has been heartwarming, and we thank you very much.

Unfortunately, continuing with this struggle requires resources - more than we can afford with our limited incomes. Therefore, we have initiated a GoFundMe page to pay for media, legal fees and other expenses required to continue our quest for funding. If you can afford to, please consider donating whatever you can to help our cause.

This has been a very stressful, difficult time for many of us but the kindness and generosity of our families, friends and neighbors has helped us to keep moving forward and remain hopeful for a positive outcome.

Thank you for your help and continued support. Bless you all!

    Richard
  • Shameful of the Diocese to do this and Ellis Hospital: that contract to remove any responsibility to St. Clare’s pension is real shameful. I can’t imagine being of retirement age expecting or actually having this pension to have it ripped away.

    Lorie
  • I truly hope & pray that these wonderful people who dedicated their time get redemption. This is beyond unfair! This was completely preventable & there is absolutely no justifiable excuse for it.

    Jessica
  • Could you imagine being an elderly retiree facing financial insecurity at the hands of a mismanaged employer and now have to face rejoining an already insure workforce just so you can feed yourself?

    Christopher
  • I support you!

    Deborah
  • You can NOT just snatch away people's future's. Unfathomable injustice!

    Christina
  • Nobody who worked full time and responsibly planned for their retirement should have to face this. It should be illegal, it’s criminal in my eyes to do this to hard working people.

    Samantha
  • This is awful. People dedicated their life to help others and get nothing for their dedication and hard work. How can there be nothing these retirees can do.

    Carol
  • I support you!

    Bradley
  • I worked for St Claire's Hospital and think that what is happening is disgusting.

  • It's disgusting that those who have worked their entire adult life knowing they would be able to retire have had the rug pulled out from under them. The Catholic Diocese isn't broke they need to act!

    Jill
  • Please add Dr Daniel J Marcus to the lust as well. We were stunned that this was announced to us so casually, as though it was acceptable. Thank you Ceil Mack for taking the lead !

    Sandra

    Julie
  • For people to spend as much time as they did to have somethi ng for the future to just get ripped off is why half the new generation doesn't work as they should. Your better off living off the state.

    Krista
  • Give them back what they ve been promised and earned.

    Barbara
  • This is absolutely disgusting to workers and their families that put in the time, now they are being abandoned and not given what they were promised. A disgrace.

    Jean
  • I support you!

    Karen
  • This is unacceptable. Something needs to be done. No reason the funds should have been mismanaged. The state takes enough of my money for welfare, they can put it towards this pension instead.

    Tony
  • I support you!

    Lisa
  • How unfair this whole thing is, the need to make this good for all ho put their years into this hospital.

    donna
  • They need to do the right thing here!

    Lisa
  • This is a disgrace! These people’s focus for their entire careers has been to help people. Now they are being abandoned when they need what they were promised.

    Melissa
  • I support you!

    Nicole
  • A pension is a promise.

    Dan
  • Hope the Catholic Church will meet their pension fund obligations to help these excellent hospital workers. The bishop was in charge of the board while this mess occurred.

    Beth
  • How is this considered acceptable by anyone? These people are owed a debt and it needs to be paid.

    Skyler
  • This is disgusting.

    Matt
  • This is a travesty of justice; Catholic church hurting people again in a different way. Pope should make sure these first responders get some of the huge amount of money donated to "help others"!!!

    Eric
  • Someone needs to be held accountable - The Catholic Diocese needs to honor the pension promise they made.

    James

    Kristina
  • Please reinstate this pension. Employees were promised a pension and depended on it.Where did the money go? Someone needs to take ownership of this. I can't see how this can be legal. God Bless!

    Karen
  • I support you!

    Kristen
  • I think this is a rotton deal for all these people who serviced the public for years. Its totally unfair.

    Tanya
  • The Catholic Diocese hasa a duty honored responsibility to care for those who have cared for so many for so long, This should be considrered by any and all parishoners next time they pass the plate

    Bruce
  • I am again flabbergasted at the audacity of Gov't and Corps taking away money from hard working CARING people. Who is at fault here? Certainly not the employees, we should take your pensions away!!!

    Pamela
  • This is a travesity and I know probably half the people affected

    John
  • This is not the right way to treat people who worked so diligently in providing care in our community.

    eileen

  • Please reinstate the pension for these wonderful people. Caring, compassionate and intelligent. They helped keep that facility open for years. This is wrong. Please reinstate!

    Dawn
  • Is there a go fund me account?

    James
  • Hold the proper people accountable. With companies changing hands and flipping pension plans constantly, oversight needs to begin happening. This is probably the tip of the iceberg.

    Pamela
  • This is so sad and just wrong!

    MICHELE
  • Not the Catholic/Christian way to treat those that gave so much to care for the sick.

    KATHE
  • This is a gross injustice, St. Clare’s Corp. apparently has no integrity.

    Izzy
  • It's difficult to make ends meet with the pension, it will be devastating without it. I don't understand how any organization can let this happen to people, much less a "Christian " one.

    Eileen
  • This is appalling! How can a company get away with simply canceling someone's pension? No longer offering a pension to new employees is one thing - stealing from current/former employees is criminal!

    Monica
  • This is just terrible to deny the pensions of so many dedicated people. I agree that the diocese does have a responsibility to cover this.

    Mary Lou

    Ann
  • How does this happen??!!😡

    Laura
  • please help these dedicated retirees present and future.

    Carol
  • Our legislators need to create laws that protect the sanctity of pensions. Saint Clare's Hospital retirees are being denied the pensions they spent a lifetime building. It is just plain wrong!

    Howard
  • taking someones pension should get jail time

    stephen
  • With anything like this I am just curious if this affects those from top down. In most cases it is not and those in the middle and on the low end of the ladder are those most affected.

    Andrew
  • They earned their pension - please find a way to restore it !

    Joseph
  • This is a horrible way to treat devoted retirees

    MaryBeth

    Lora
  • The hospital mission included the Catholic commands to respect , honor and give dignity to life. It would be imperitive to extend this to all who enter St. Clare’s Hospital. Please restore pensions!

  • It is ludricrous that a business that had dedicated employees would take away their earned pension, what they worked for and earned! Higher executives GIVE UP a higher % or all of of your pension!

    Cathy
  • This is awful. How could St Clair's do this?

    Brian
  • This is outrageous! The Catholic Church should have paid for the insurance on this fund. Someone needs to be held accountable.

    Cherie

  • The pension numbers stated do not add up. Where did the $28M from the state go. It was not all lost in the 2008 recession. And why was $28M provided by state when it was not sufficient.

    John
  • I support you!

    Jean

    David
  • I'm curious if the Berger Commission had the pension plan reviewed by actuaries.

    George
  • Shame in the Roman Catholic Church, by not standing by all these wonderful people! Have your attorney preform a Post Office box break, to obtain a physical address for this “so called” Joe Pofit.

    Dee
  • We were known as The Peoples Hospital. Volunteers initiated the building of St. Clare's with a petition! (My Mom helped with petition). It worked once so let's do it again!

    Kathleen
  • I had surgery at St.Clare's as did my mother. We received exceptional care from the host of "healers" who worked there. The loss of their pension is critical to their lives. FIX THIS INJUSTICE,PLEASE

    Joan
  • Not acceptable!!!

    Deborah
  • Incredibly sad and so devastating for these folks. Something must be done-if it can happen to them, anyone is vulnerable

    Jackie
  • My sister in law worked here from 1975 till it’s merger with Ellis, you couldn’t find a more dedicated RN like her, this is such a slap in the face, and an insult to all her hard work and compassion!

    Judy
  • True angels of mercy that gave and gave...St. Clare’s was easy to get to..many poor people had no cars..St. Clare’s should never have been closed.

    Shirley

    Joseph
  • My family were patients at St.Clare's for many years. My mother's life depended on so many medical professionals that encompassed this small hospital. It was the saving grace on McClellan Street --

    PAM
  • 28 years of service forgotten

    Patricia
  • These employees are entitled to their pension. They worked hard for their money for when they retire. They need to investigate and find out what happened with their money. This is not right.

    Beverly
  • What has this world come to? People work hard and plan for their future only to have it stolen away....

  • There was a Nurse that worked in Labor & delivery, Nov. 1995. Her name was Rose. I'll never forget her. She saved my Life!

    Carlita
  • My mom worked tirelessly for over 20 years. It is unfair that she is not able to rely on her pension when she put so much of herself into her work. So many people spent their lives here.

    Kimberly
  • Investigation into this matter needs to be initiated into the legality of dissolution of these pensions. Where did all the pension funds go and who should be held responsible.

    Ann
  • Please give these dedicated caring individual s their due. Change future retirement if you must, but these current pension holders future quality of life depends on this pension. Thank you.

    Ann

    Joanne
  • The revocation of the employee pension fund is just wrong. Step up and do the right thing!,

    Cathleen
  • A loss of a pension following years of compassionate care is unfathomable. YES, it is true that St. Clare's employees who worked a lifetime may never see a penny of this pension. Not right!

    Judith
  • Time to get the Federal Government involved in a criminal investigation here! The person or persons involved in this criminal act need to be prosecuted and held accountable! Praying for restitution 🙏

    William

    Diane
  • This is aweful someone needs to fix this. There was supposed to be money for at least ten more years and now its gone. Did someone use the money or misuse it.

    Katherine
  • I worked at St Clares from 1996 until the merger. So many of my former co-workers count on their pension for basic necessities, it's devastating to lose it

  • 29 years of service.

    Anthony
  • Prayers that a solution is found to help those who have spent their lives helping others!

  • It has been an honor to work with these people. They served the whole community for a long time and deserve a happy retirement. They invested in you...INVEST in them!!

    Brian
  • Shining example of the Albany Diocese being a perfectly reputable bunch of thieves. Plus, you paid for it. NYS gave $28.5M to the pension fund. Where did all that money go?

    Michael
  • This is completely unacceptable to take money from these hard working dedicated people who paid towards their pensions for years and years. Fix this!

    Jammie
  • Reinstate pension for Lori Daviero and countless others effected by the pension program & hold the diocese accountable for all monies each “contributor” is entitled to in accordance with agreement...

    Norman

    Mary
  • Years of service monies due for hard work , sacrifices upon sacrifices . This is shameful and accountability is due . Prosecution is warranted.

    Christine
  • I thought part of the merger Agreement was to keep the pension funded.

    Manish
  • I worked 23 years at St.Clare's and will not receive a penny. The Albany Catholic Diocese was instrumental in getting St Clare's church status. And yet they take no responsibility?

    Rebeccca
  • Over 1/2 of vested employees receiving zero warrants investigating. Board was responsible to supervise Prudential's pension investment decisions. They can't wash their hands like Pontius Pilate.

    Christopher
  • I worked @ St Clare’s 13 years get nothing!

    Geri
  • So wrong in so many ways. Money that should have gone to employees, now disappeared... Sounds suspicious, someone should follow the money trail to see where it's gone???

    Gerald
  • Hopefully everyone will sign as this needs to be fixed.

    Diane

    Christina
  • I have 35 years of service with St Clare’s and because I was 2 months short of the age requirement my pension will stop completely. My husband has 29 years and will not receive any pension at all.

    Larry
  • Removing pensions from people who worked so faithfully is simply unconscionable. Whoever is responsible for this should be ashamed.

    Cathy
  • I was born at St. Clare’s and my family relied on care from this hospital and spiritual nurturance from this diocese for decades. Breaking a covenant on pensions does not reflect values of either org.

    Carol
  • I support you!

    Emily
  • Hope we can get some attention with this article of the politicians.

    Tamela
  • The reason St Clares could not fund its pension is because we were predominantly taking care of the indigent & elderly Schenectady communities at low revenue rates. The State should step

    Teresa
  • I dedicated 31 yrs of my life to St. Clare’s Hospital and now I will not receive a pension. This is inexcusable. Please help our St. Clare’s family.

    Linda
  • We just don’t understand after all that we put into caring for the people we served how this could ever happen. How are those who have worked 20, 30, 40 years going to survive? Is this even lega.

    Deborah and Mike
  • This issue must be resolved. Those who have dedicated their lives of professional service to St. Clares must be given the pension they were promised.

    Donna
  • It saddens me to see my family go through something so devastating after dedicated work for a catholic hospital for 36 years. None of this is “ok” no matter how you look at it.

    Latisha
  • Absolutely a disgraceful thing to happen to employees that worked their whole life expecting to receive a pension just to have it taken away. It’s pretty sad that the Catholic Church would do this!!!

    Mary
  • State mandated closure +$50M taxpayer$ in 2009 invested in S&P 500 should be ~$300M today. Cuomo cronies likely stole the money leaving decent, honest employees destitute. Shame on NY Democrats.

    Kyle
  • St. Clare's was the heart and soul of the community for the patients AND the employees. It was an HONOR to work there. We are now being dishonored.............

    Gina
  • Worked st clares since 1985. This is gross mismanagement of funds. This leaves many of us working longer than expected. Why cant officials step in to see what has really happened.

    Juanita
  • I think it is very unfair to take this away from the people who were very dedicated to the cause. You really should be ashamed to even consider doing this to these people. Please reconsider .

    MaryPat
  • I worked at St Clare’s Hospital for just under 25 years and I will not receive any pension. Just not fair!

    Cathy-Jo
  • Everyone should try to imagine that at this stage of our lives, after years of hard work and dedication, we come up empty thru no fault of our own. All taken away

    Linda
  • We need the community support NOW in the same true spirit that we St Clare's staff worked to support this community.

    Anne
  • I’m not even in health care but this is absolutely the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of! I cannot imagine such a thing! A huge promise taken back. Shame shame shame on you.

    Kristen
  • These former employees gave years of dedicated service; they deserve their pension.

    Jennifer
  • It's a travesty. Although I will get some pension, it's about 1/2 of what I planned on. Even worse; 600 plus of our dedicated co-workers, get nothing. NOTHING! We had counted on that, now it's going.

    Peter
  • We worked endless hours to care for the many unfortunate people of our community. Who will care for us? Where did all the money that was put aside for our retirement go?

    Marty
  • Worked there 2 years. This is 100% wrong. Where are the great politicians (Tedisco, et. al.) on this? My advice: if you work for a religious affiliated hospital, roll over to an IRA ASAP.

    JAMES
  • Do the right thing

    Edwin
  • Please pay these workers the pension they were promised for decades. Many people will rely on this income to support them in retirement after so many years of service.

    Lisa
  • The sudden 3 mo notice to end my pension is unjust! Many of us were shocked about the notice in 2017 that the fund would run out between 2024-2028 but tried to plan and adjust. But this latest move was unconciionable.

    Sue
  • I was at SCH 28yrs, Ellis 10 yrs. We worked hard, we took excellent care of our pts. We were promised a pension- that promise was broken. So many of us will now have to alter our life plans. So unjust.

    Sandra
